No Plan B

June 17th, 2010 16 comments

On any given week, I am invited to two or three free social activities. Sometimes it’s a party, sometimes it’s a concert, sometimes it’s a listening session, and sometimes it’s a movie screening. For each of these things, I’m likely granted a plus-1 so I can take whoever I want (or whoever is free), and from there, the search for the perfect guest begins. But it goes far beyond whoever is free or whoever I like at the moment, and I definitely don’t try to use my access as a means to impress a girl. That’s how people get played.

For me, if I ask someone to join me for a specific show or event, it is because not only do I think they will have a good time with me, they’ll have  a good time at wherever I’m taking them. This is strategic, but not as a means to get some tail.

The Girls That Make Me Nervous

June 16th, 2010 45 comments

I have complete confidence in myself and my ability to talk to women. What to say, what to do, how to play the situation, none of these things are foreign to me. They’re quite easy actually. But then someone comes along and all the confidence I have is nowhere to be found. It’s gone away, and left me wondering when it’s going to return.

This isn’t to sound like a sucker for love or anything. Yeah, I have been one of those once or twice in my life, but I’m not about to call myself out for such a thing right now. Today, I just want to write something for the guys who get nervous every now and then around a particular girl. They may not admit to it, but they know exactly what this is about.

Five Types of Women I GUESS I’d Date

June 15th, 2010 25 comments

Everyone has their somethings, the things we really enjoy and hope we can find someone else with whom to enjoy them, but sometimes life doesn’t work out so neatly. Sometimes, we have to incorporate things like compromise if we are to get along with our significant others. The woman may be completely awesome and like a whole bunch of things I like too, but then there’s this other hyper-specific thing she’s into and I just can’t roll. Reason to leave? Depends on what that thing is.

Here are five types of women I would date in spite of their differences.

Some Rambling Words From Uncle Jozen

June 14th, 2010 42 comments

Well folks, it’s official, I am now an uncle to a beautiful niece. Her name is Armoni (pronounced like the fashion label), and she came into this world on June 11, at something like 7 pounds, 21 inches.

My sister’s in great shape post-delivery, the father has stayed at the hospital with her every night, and our family couldn’t be happier. I know I couldn’t be happier. With Armoni in my family, my whole life has now changed for the better and now it’s time for Uncle Jozen to do everything he can for his only niece, but just as important, for his only sister too.

Dumb Things Guys Do – Number 1

June 11th, 2010 10 comments

Us guys, we’re a peculiar group. Sometimes, I find the things my brethren and I do to be confusing, nonsensical, and frankly, idiotic. No shots at any one particular, no jabs at one group of men over another group of men. I am not without fault when it comes to masculine stupidity, and I feel I have demonstrated this numerous times on my blog.

What I probably haven’t shown is the ways guys are idiots to each other. I love my boys, and I know my boys love me, but every once in a while we have to call each other out on the dumb stuff we do.

So begins an ongoing series in which I share boneheaded and unnecessary dumb things men say and do towards one another. Think of these as loose outlines to a Judd Apatow movie script. I will not break down why guys do these things, or why I do these things, I will just put them out there as discussion fodder, and if you don’t understand, don’t look for me to explain. It’s a guy thing.

Five Types Of Women I Would Like To Date Before I Get Married According To Profession

June 9th, 2010 34 comments

A reader of mine hit me up the other day to ask if I would write a blog about dating flight attendants. I said, “No.” But of course I wasn’t so dry with my response. As I told her, I can’t write a blog about dating flight attendants because I never dated one, but they are on my list of women I would like to date.

Right up there with looks, a woman’s profession is probably one of the most superficial qualities that captivate me. To me, the more interesting the profession, the more interesting the life, the more interesting the discussion. Not only that, but I especially love a woman who loves what she does for a living and I can’t tolerate a woman who doesn’t.

Thanks to the reader who hit me up and asked me to do a blog about flight attendants, it is because of her suggestion I am doing a post today about the five women I am intrigued to date according to profession*. Read more…

In regards to Slim Thug’s blog about black women for, some other bloggers and I offer up our two cents. Don’t look for me to say much else about it, as I can’t see myself getting worked up over something said by a guy named Slim Thug.

The Inconvenient True Confessions of a Broke Man

June 8th, 2010 76 comments

Of all the ways my ex displayed her anger towards me after we broke up, there was one move she made that was so low, even she had to apologize for it.

I wasn’t aware of what she was saying about me to her friends once we broke up, nor did I care to ask, but in one of our post-conversation breakups, my ex revealed to me she told her friends how much (or, rather, little) I made at my job.

“Well, that’s low,” I said.

“I know,” she said. “And I’m sorry, but I was just so angry with you and that’s all I had. I knew it would hurt you.”

Even though at the time she told me about this, I was in a much better financial state, her intent was successful. It did hurt me, but not because I was embarrassed by my old salary. The real reason it stung is because when my ex and I were together, she knew how uncomfortable I was with sharing my finances. It wasn’t until she saw an eviction letter on my door when we were living together that I told her the whole truth, and even then, I had to be coerced.

This post isn’t about the noble acts of a broke man, or to tear down men with money. A good man is a good man no matter how much he makes.

What this post is about is the difficulty of being honest when we are broke with women who may or may not care in the first place.
